In the Press – NZ Management Magazine features Celcius Coffee

Just Good Business buzz: Coffee? Carbon-free?

Hutt Valley business Celcius Coffee has become the first coffee roaster in the country to be certified under the carboNZero programme’s small enterprise certification scheme.
This means the company has measured and reduced its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and then offset the remaining unavoidable emissions by purchasing verified carbon credits from credible New Zealand projects.
It is, says owner Stephanie Fry, “the icing on the cake for our business”. Celsius has already earned industry awards, roasts 100 percent organic, certified Fairtrade coffee and is a member of the Sustainable Business Network, says Fry.
“This completes our story because it shows how seriously we view environmental issues like GHG emissions, climate change and sustainability.”
Celcius Coffee’s main source of emissions comes from the use of vehicles. The company has reduced this by purchasing a smaller more economic vehicle and may again reduce its car size and report and monitor its petrol consumption in order to identify areas for even further reductions and savings. Other emissions for Celcius Coffee included freight (16 percent), LPG (six percent and electricity (12 percent).
In total, Celcius Coffee offset 16 tonnes of CO2 through carbon credits from the TrustPower Tararua II PRE (Projects to Reduce Emissions) wind power project.

Your actions make all the difference to the council’s decision to make Wellington New Zealand’s first Fair Trade City

So please help by doing some or all of the following:

1. Sign the very simple online petition below:
http://www.wellington.govt.nz/haveyoursay/e-petitions/ep/viewsignatures/76
We have got over 570 signatures since the launch, so let’s keep going!

2. Sign up your workplace, business, faith group, club or community group to be recognised as Fair Trade –
www.fairtrade.org.nz/FTAANZ/fairtradecommunities
Brings positive publicity and show that your group, workplace or organisation is serious about corporate social responsibility by doing two things:
a) Use Fair Trade certified products in your cafeteria or meetings;
b) Promote Fair Trade in your workplace, business, faith group or club or group.

Becoming a Fair Trade community group can help your organisation meet sustainability, environmental and social responsibility goals. It can improve morale by supporting poorer communities with every cup of tea or coffee… and it’s FREE! Fair Trade certified products are not only better for the producers, they are tasty too, so tell your procurement manager’s about this now!

3. Pass this message on – the more people that know about these actions the better!

Cheers
Stephanie Fry – Owner – Celcius Coffee &  Member of Make Wellington Fair Trade Steering Group
